The URBACT CityLogo Network is a transnational learning experience on citybranding and -marketing in modern urban politics. It is about a better positioning of cities in the (post) crisis economic arena and reinforcing the communication dimension in urban management. Aarhus is one of the Partner Cities of the City Logo Network, and holds a significant position as Western Denmark’s knowledge and growth centre. The city has 1.2 million inhabitants within 1 hour’s drive and a university in the top 100 of the world’s 17.000 universities. This is instrumental in ensuring easy access to knowledge and labor of high international standards for the city’s businesses.
Aarhus is experiencing rapid development. The population is growing and this growth is projected to continue in the years to come. During the last ten years, Aarhus has been one of the fastest developing growth centers in Denmark. During the same period unemployment has been the lowest among the bigger Danish cities.
Internet week Denmark 2014: an on-brand event in Aarhus
Internet week Denmark (#iwdk) is a crowd sourced event. It showcases the strong internet and digital clusters in Aarhus. This event illustrates the city-brand-DNA as a city that’s city works together to create magic.IWDK is a public private partnership initiated by Smart Aarhus and financially supported by the Municipality. A local business created and funded the event website, the municipality curates the program and supports PR. Local businesses, institutions and organizations created all the content in terms of seminars, lectures, hackathon, company visits, bars and many more events.
The object of the festival is to strengthen the internet economy in Denmark. Our purpose was to frame the meeting between private and public players, who work with internet economy. This resulted in:
- 123 events hosted by the local community throughout the region
- 3000+ participants
- strong of media coverage, including TV and radio features
- exchanging of ideas and networking
After its premier in 2014 Internet week Denmark is known to be a profiessional and folksy festival, because it created network for Danes and supported initiatives that promoted the digital culture and educated the Danish citizens. One of the recurring comments from participants was: “The festival is important because it marked and acknowledged the importance of IT.”
Funding for 3 more years
The city council in Aarhus has decided to secure founding to repeat the success in the years to come. This allows us to further explore the concept in 2015 and the following years.
